Oxytocin is an important social bonding hormone. When a woman goes into labor, oxytocin in the bloodstream helps to facilitate birth, bonding with the baby, and breastfeeding. Oxytocin is also called the "cuddle hormone." It is even measurably increased when petting a dog, facilitating the bond between human and pet.
